What is ICANN?

WDRP refers to Whois Data Reminder Policy and it is an ICANN requirement. According to ICANN, WDRP states that all registrant must ensure their current Whois information at least once in a year.

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has introduced the new transparency rule. The rule says that ICANN requires change in the registrar agreement to have registrants to verify their valid data. All domain registrars must send an email with valid link to specific top level domains (.com, .net, .org).

Invalid Whois information would affect registrar’sdomain name. If a registrar has Whois data and it is incomplete or suspicious, an email will be sent out to registered email address for confirmation and updating of the information. Then the domain registrants must update their Whois data information through the link.

Updating the correct information of Whois data is very important for domain name registrar. If the registrar fails to update information, it can result in the deactivation of the domain. If the information is accurate, you need not worry about anything regarding.

Note: ICANN oversees the domain name system, but it really does not send out any WDRP emails. These mails are mainly sent out by domain name registrars or resellers in order to comply with an ICANN policy. Some registrars or resellers will send out messages from an "icann@" email account. But these messages do not come from ICANN.

ICANN only requires domain name registrars to send WDRP notices to registrants in order to make sure that Whois records are maintained accurately.

How do I validate a domain name?

If you receive an ICANN Whois email, it is just to notify the domain registrars to update the valid Whois information.

Here is the sample ICANN mail:
