How to create an addon domain in cPanel
What is an addon domain?
A new addon domain is a different website hosted in a new folder in your account to host many domains from one control panel. So in other words, it links a new domain name to a subdirectory of your document root directory, and then stores its files in that subdirectory.
Addon Domains and sub domains may look like separate domains to viewers, but for the server it is the same.
Let’s see what happens whenever you create an addon domain.
- a folder is created in the ‘public_html’ directory
- a subdomain is created for the primary domain and attached to the new folder
- the new domain name is associated with the subdomain
For example, if the primary domain was ‘hoasted.com’ and you assign the Addon Domain ‘hoasting.com’ to the folder ‘hoasting’, then the following URLs are possible:
These paths access the same directory and display the same website. But in concern to your website’s viewers going to hoasting.com, there is no evidence that they are being routed through hoasting.hoasted.com.
Some of the benefits of an addon domain include:
- Add multiple domains with same hosting account
- Save time and cost
- Provide resources to client at one place (your website)
- Approach your addon domain using various web site addresses
- SEO benefits
