We have worked with WordPress, and done SEO optimization for it for years. We’ve tried mainstrean and obscure techniques and settled on our favorite techniques and plugins. The best WordPress SEO plugin for 2015 is one that is in our ‘install this always’ arsenal.
Our criteria for the best plugin
There are 2 things that matter:
- Getting the basics right
- Giving advanced control
The basics is pretty straight forward, it needs to deliver the foundation for great SEO. We’ll dive into what that means below.
In addition to that, we at Hoasted are developers. That means we want to control everything. Even if we don’t do it, we want to have the option.
Best WordPress SEO plugin 2015: Yoast
The Yoast plugin has been in business for a long time, and they have continued to develop with the SEO landscape. The founder of this plugin is a Dutch man calles Joost de Valk, the plugin name is a phonetic spelling of his name.
The reasons for our choice are clear:
- They get the basics right, and really right
- They have many advanced features
Yoast gives you control over basic attributes like:
- Page SEO titles
- Meta descriptions
- Sitemap structure
- Index/noindex control
But that is only the bare basics, Yoast has a plenitude of features that allow for advanced and powerful customization:
- Appearance on social networks (how does your shared post look?)
- Google authorship
- Google knowledge graph data
- URL control (permalink structure, removal of query strings etc)
- Variable based defaults
- Customized RSS
These are just a small selection of the advanced features. Pretty much anything SEO related is in there.
My favorite feature: SEO Analysis
Yoast is built to be helpful. Personally I love the SEO analysis is does per post. This for example is the analysis of this article so far:
This is so incredibly powerful for a number of reasons:
- As a beginner you learn the basics of SEO quickly
- As the owner you can let non-experts do some SEO optimization
- It acts as a checklist, you never forget any details
Yoast is a very popular plugin, linked to a very professional company. They don’t include functions unless they are certain they have a measurable impact. Personally I miss the support of Schema tags, though that might be included soon. Luckily there are plenty of plugins for that.
We have used Yoast for years and they have never failed us. They are on top of SEO developments and implement the latest SEO techniques in their plugin. We highly recommend usung the Yoast SEO plugin.
Warning: A plugin is only the start
For all you beginners, SEO is not about just installing a plugin. It is about generating valuable content in a way that search engines want to serve it to their users.
Content is king, and will always be. Yoast will help you make your content search engine friendly, it is up to you to write content that users desire.
